In our busy lives, countless things demand our attention and drain our energy every day - from our households and families to our careers, technology, and media. Each source of attention acts like an energetic cord, plugged into us, taking a share of our focus and vitality. Without regular resetting, these cords can become like multiple open tabs on a computer, slowing us down, draining us, and causing stress.
This cord-cutting practice will help you reclaim your energy, reset your boundaries, and choose mindfully where your energy flows. With practice, you'll experience a renewed sense of calm, inner strength, and clarity about how you wish to engage with the world around you.
The Benefits of Energetic Cord-Cutting
1. Increased Energy: By releasing attachments that no longer serve you, you reclaim energy for yourself.
2. Enhanced Focus: Fewer energetic pulls mean a clearer, calmer mind to focus on what matters most.
3. Reduced Stress: Regularly disconnecting from external pressures and demands helps reduce feelings of overwhelm and anxiety.
4. Restored Boundaries: Creating healthy energetic boundaries helps you manage your energy more intentionally.
Step-by-Step Cord-Cutting Practice
1. Identify What Drains Your Energy
Take a few minutes to reflect on everything that demands your attention each day. Write down or mentally list all these sources, such as:
Household responsibilities
Loved ones, family, children
Work tasks, colleagues, clients
Technology (phones, TVs, computers)
Social media, news, and other media sources
Recognize that each of these things, while important, draws from your energy reserves, and it’s okay to occasionally step back from them.
2. Find a Quiet Space and Connect to Your Breath
Settle into a comfortable, quiet space where you can focus without interruptions. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and bring your awareness inward. Feel your body relaxing as you connect to the rhythm of your breath.
3. Visualize the Energetic Cords
Imagine each of these energy-draining sources as a cord or link extending from your body. Visualize these cords attached to each area of your life that requires your attention, gently pulling on your energy.
Each cord represents a commitment, an expectation, or an obligation. Picture these cords gently plugged into your body, drawing from your attention and vitality.
4. Cut the Cords with Love and Kindness
Now, one by one, gently disconnect each cord. Visualize yourself cutting each cord with love and compassion. With each cord you release, feel a sense of freedom, like closing tabs on a computer to refresh your system.
As you cut each cord, do so with gratitude for the role it plays in your life, but also with the knowledge that right now, you’re reclaiming your energy for yourself.
5. Fill Your Cup First
With your energy returned, visualize yourself filling your own cup. See your body and mind replenishing, feeling calm, grounded, and strong. Trust that you’re doing this so you can better serve yourself and those you love when you’re ready to engage again.
6. Set Your Intention for Where Your Energy Is Best Served
Take a moment to reflect on where your energy is most needed right now. By filling your own cup first, you’re better able to choose mindfully how and where you will focus your energy, so it’s best served for yourself and those who truly matter.
